BRIDE & MOTHER: A WOMEN’S RETREAT

When the concrete jungle gradually turns to rolling hills of green, and sunlight glistens over distant peaks of hazy blue, as one drives along windy roads with no shortcuts back to the busy noise of routine, something changes in the heart. The restless heart, previously told by the world to sit in a corner and stop crying, to slap on bandaid after bandaid of distraction, is free. It’s free to gently brush its fingertips upon the ungraspable reality that is its own existence. There, one voice is able to penetrate through the barrier of shouts all claiming to have life’s answers and say, “I love you, my daughter.”

THE TRUTH: GOD’S LOVE

In SPO we have a lot of catch phrases and over-used terminology, which I’m sure you’ve heard. “Receive what the Lord has for us,” “God desires our good,” and “have the Lord’s heart for his people.” What does that even mean, right? It’s easy for us to graze over phrases like these without giving them a second thought, but there’s one thing that we can’t afford to miss. There’s one thing that if we miss it, every other devotion or ambition we pursue–spiritual or otherwise–will be completely pointless: God’s love.

THE MODERN-DAY MARTHA

busy1-500x350“Whether we like it or not, we are a product of our environment,” said George Pappas–one of our Mission Directors–during his Formation talk entitled Our Vocation and the Disney Generation. Even if we try our best to be “in this world but not of it,” we can’t help but learn from our surroundings, and one of the lessons it teaches is this: if you aren’t burnt-out, in-over-your-head, non-stop busy, something’s wrong with you.
